The Design

Pivotal to the design are copper covered, rotating planters, adding interest and surprise in equal measure. Used to create alternative paths, they will lead you through the garden where a relaxation area is found comprising spruce roundels, backed by a recycled glass ledge and black metal water rill. The garden is paved with Travertine, with a tree slice inlay in front of the roundels. The paving is flanked by beds of wildlife friendly plants giving an unruly contrast to the otherwise smooth elements.

 

 

The Plants

The somewhat eclectic choice of plants were assembled predominantly with a view to attracting wildlife. However, the choice also included plants for form and structure. The ground cover plants were intersected by the taller grasses for textural interest. Alongside the seating area were two small chamomile beds dotted with red Sempervivum and Imperata. This unusual combination had been created for scent and structural-textural interest. Other plants had been chosen for their ability to attract a variety of bees, butterflies and birds, either because of their bright colour (butterflies are short-sighted) or for their nectar. The ground cover plants, mainly used for their foliage colour, would provide security for small mammals and the grasses would provide seed later in the year. The colour palette consisted of purple, acid green and copper which was opened up with splashes of primary red and yellow and soothed by blue.
