Design Process

Preliminary Site Visit and Consultation

This initial meeting will be to discuss not only what you, the client, require from your garden but also what you require from me, the designer.  Options on the best way forward, whether it is a full garden design or simply a few hours consultation with a follow-up report can be considered.  If a full design is required a Client Brief will be completed during this appointment.  This information will cover both the desired ambience and emotions which you wish for your garden, as well as the necessary practicalities. 

Client Brief

A report detailing your requirements (the Client Brief) will be supplied together with a copy of my terms and conditions.  If you are happy with my understanding of your requirements and wish to proceed, a letter confirming this, together with a signed copy of my terms and conditions, is returned to me.  Upon receipt of these documents an appointment can be made to carry out the Site Survey. 

Site Survey

This survey will comprise all measurable elements within the garden boundaries, including the house and other structures.  An inventory will also be completed comprising existing features and elements; for instance, soil type, views and existing services.  This work will become the basis for all future work and usually takes a minimum of 4 hours, including drawing up.  Where size and complexity dictates, it may be necessary to engage a professional surveyor who will invoice directly.

Sketch Plans

Sketch plans are made as a first draft which are discussed at a second consultation.  During this second consultation any changes or afterthoughts that may arise will be discussed in order to incorporate them into the master plan.

Master Plans

The master plan will then be drawn up with any necessary supporting perspective and elevation drawings. The completed garden design is presented to you at which time the design fee is due.  Two copies of the design will be submitted.  At this stage you can either choose to continue independently or to engage me to undertake the contract and/or project managment of the build.

Contract & Project Management

I am able to prepare Tender documents, Specifications and Bills of Quantities for submission to contractors for quoting purposes as well as Project Manage the build to ensure that the integrity of the design does not become compromised. 

Fees

The overall cost of designing a garden is dictated by both the size of the site and the complexity of the client's requirements. However, my general fees are set out here for your information. I believe you will find them comparable to other landscape and garden designers.
